Bungie responds after Destiny 2 The Final Shape was “accidentally released live on PS5” early

Update 31 May 2024: Bungie released a statement after “part” of Destiny 2’s The Final Shape expansion was “accidentally released live” on the PS5 streaming service.

The studio admitted that spoilers were being shared online and that “a small group of players” had access to the campaign, collections, echoes and “other information about the rewards”.

The team is therefore advising players who don’t want the experience to be spoiled to “be very careful” on social media ahead of The Final Shape’s release next week, and is asking those who have seen the spoilers to “please be considerate of others”.

“Thank you to all members of our community who have already helped us by reporting leaks and those who are actively working to prevent more of the experience from being shared before the planned date,” the statement concluded.

“It’s always extremely difficult when our team’s hard work comes to an end early, but we’re still excited for everyone to experience the full release on June 4th together.”

The original story is as follows.

30 May 2024: Eyes up, Guardian – The Final Shape DLC has leaked online after the expansion was temporarily available earlier today.

As has been reported dozens of times in the Destiny 2 subreddit community and beyond, “all” of The Final Shape DLC was playable — though some say that’s an exaggeration and the content is simply accessible — until developer Bungie eventually “killed” the servers.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t before story spoilers, raids, trophies, loot, and more—much, much more—flooded social media and online communities. It looks like the content became available after yesterday’s scheduled maintenance.

No spoilers included in this story.

“All DLC is playable right now. If you don’t want spoilers, now’s your chance to save yourself from sub, from X, from everything,” said a Destiny 2 player on the official subreddit, captioning his post: “CODE RED : SPOILERS COMING EVERYWHERE, DLC LEAKED”.

“PC servers destroyed, Bungie/Sony about to attempt full damage control,” read the first update to their post, quickly followed by “UPDATE 2: This leak tops everything else. Raid gear, raid mechanics, HUGE STORY SPOILERS. LIKE. .. If you don’t like leaks/spoilers tomorrow will be hell get off the internet I’d be surprised if they don’t release TFC earlier to avoid spoiling.

According to the poster, players who happened to have the new update were “somehow still online even though the servers were down lmao.”

“The full campaign is available. Seasonal stuff too,” the poster explains.

Eventually, the content was moved offline again. It’s been speculated, but not definitively confirmed, that players accessed the new content via a “Sony backend fu*k up” similar to what some used to get a premature peek at the Elden Ring DLC.

As of this writing, neither Bungie nor Sony have publicly acknowledged the leak.

Last week, Guardians got our first look at — well, listen, technically — Keith David’s Commander Zavala in Destiny 2: The Final Shape.

We already knew Bungie had no plans to remove Zavala from Destiny 2’s story, as he was “central” to the upcoming The Final Shape expansion, but this is the first time we’ve heard Zavala voiced by David. Until now, Zavala’s voice was pre-recorded by his original voice actor, Lance Reddick, who sadly passed away last year.
